Working in London homes

What London housing means for plumbing and heating

London's housing is old and mixed. Around half of the homes here were built before 1945, and inner London is dominated by Victorian and Edwardian terraces and purpose-built mansion blocks. Many have solid walls with no cavity, which changes how pipes are routed and makes retrofits like underfloor heating more involved than on a modern estate.

Further out the picture shifts. In Waltham Forest, terraced houses make up around four in ten homes and flats close to the same again, with a large share built before 1919, so boiler swaps and leak repairs often happen inside conversion flats with shared risers. In Stratford, the older E15 streets of terraces and semis sit a short walk from new-build E20 blocks, and the work changes from one street to the next.
