What a Boiler Replacement Involves

A typical replacement covers removing the old boiler, adapting the gas, water and heating connections, fitting the new boiler and flue, cleaning the system water and setting up the controls. The gas supply pipe is checked for size, as modern boilers can need a larger pipe than the one feeding the old appliance.

Everything is itemised in a written quote before we start: the boiler model, flue kit, filter, controls, any pipework changes and removal of the old unit. The manufacturer warranty depends on the model and on the boiler being registered, and we explain both in the quote.

Choosing the Right Boiler Type for Your Home

The right boiler is the one that matches how your home uses heat and hot water. We look at bedrooms, bathrooms, how many taps run at once and the mains flow at the kitchen tap before suggesting a type and output.

• Combi: hot water on demand and no cylinder, suited to flats and smaller homes with one bathroom
• System: a sealed boiler with a hot water cylinder, better where two showers may run together
• Regular (heat-only): keeps loft tanks and a cylinder, sometimes the sensible choice for older gravity-fed systems

Installation Process and What Happens on the Day

A like-for-like combi swap in the same spot is often completed in a single day. Converting a regular or system boiler to a combi, or moving the boiler to a new room, usually takes longer, and we tell you the expected length in the quote. Heating and hot water will be off for part of that time.

We protect floors and the route to the boiler, drain down the system, remove the old appliance and fit the new one. Once connected, we fill and vent the system, test gas tightness, check combustion and run the heating through every radiator. Before we leave, we show you the controls and how to top up the pressure.

System Cleaning, Filters and Controls Fitted with a New Boiler

A new boiler connected to dirty system water can fail early. Old pipes and radiators hold magnetite sludge and debris, so we clean the system before or during the install. For badly contaminated systems, a power flush may be needed first, and we will say if we think it is.

Every new boiler we fit gets a magnetic filter on the return pipe to catch loose particles, and the system is dosed with inhibitor to slow corrosion. We also fit or upgrade controls to meet the manufacturer's and building regulation requirements, such as a programmable room thermostat and TRVs where radiators do not have them.

Flue position is where many London replacements get complicated. A flue terminal must sit set distances from windows, doors, boundaries and neighbouring openings, and some old positions no longer comply. In narrow Victorian terraces and side returns that can mean a vertical flue through the roof or a plume management kit to direct vapour away.

Mansion blocks bring their own questions: shared flues, freeholder or managing agent consent for new wall openings, and condensate pipes that need a sensible route to a drain.
